Making a difference in the community

People development delivers tangible impacts beyond the organisation – the benefits of empowering people spill over into the communities where they live and work.

Take Lila, for example. She, along with her husband, runs a small shop selling crafts and clothing to tourists in Bogmallo, Goa, India. The village is a tight knit community who rely on tourism as the primary source of income. A school is at the heart of the village where children from all backgrounds go 6 days a week.

As part of a performance management programme, participants from Imerys met with Lila and other traders. The encounter allowed them to establish how they could best invest monies raised during the programme to immediately improve the lives of the families.

Lila and the traders welcomed the opportunity to discuss their business ideas and the personal needs of their families. They were given vital supplies to support their family needs and a boost in confidence by the support and encouragement of the participants.

The participants discovered how the brave entrepreneurs were planning their survival as the tourists stay at home during the economic crisis. They were also able to put into practice their key management skills through questioning, listening, demonstrating empathy, decision making and motivation.

By taking a holistic approach to learning and development programmes, the impact of the participants’ learning experiences empowers them to touch the lives of the people in their communities – and in turn maximise business performance.
